Hepatitis C and harm reduction for people who use drugs
Between March and October 2016, Doctors of the World/Médecins du Monde (MdM) organized a series of trainings on hepatitis C intended for its Harm Reduction international teams and partners with a focus on people who use drugs.
Four trainings were held in Hanoi (Vietnam), Myitkyina (Myanmar), Nairobi (Kenya) and Dar Es Salam (Tanzania), involving care providers, social workers and peer educators working with MdM and its partners.
These trainings aimed at strengthening participants’ knowledge and capacities not only to improve the quality of hepatitis C prevention and screening services in Harm Reduction programs but also to further develop their expertise and thus boost advocacy for a universal access to hepatitis C prevention and treatment.

Presentation 1 : What is Hepatitis C Virus
The objective of this module is to understand what hepatitis C virus is and to distinguish it from other viruses.
Presentation 2 : Natural History of Hepatitis C infection
The objective of this module is to understand how HCV affects health and how to limit progression of chronic hepatitis C.
Presentation 3 : HCV screening diagnosis and disease assessment
The objective of this module is to be able to interpret and explain the possible results of hepatitis C anti-body test; and to identify what are the further test to diagnose hepatitis C and assess liver disease
Presentation 4 : HCV transmission and drug use
The objective of this module is to be able to identify different risks of HCV transmission associated with drug use
Presentation 5 : HCV Test Counselling
The objective of this module is to understand the objective of HCV test counselling and to be able to apply a range of steps to provide hepatitis C test counselling. A set of 4 pedagogical videos on HCV test counselling for people who use drugs in the context of limited access to PCR/viral load test can be used for this session.
Presentation 6 : HCV treatment
The objective of this module is to understand and explain key elements of HCV treatment
Presentation 7 : HCV treatment for PWID
The objective of this module is to reflect on the arguments usually used to refuse PWID access to HCV testing and treatment and to understand key elements related to HCV treatment for PWID
Presentation 8 : Hepatitis C prevention in Harm Reduction for PWID
The objective of this module is to identify key components of harm reduction specific to prevention of HCV transmission in PWID
Presentation 9 : Tackling the hepatitis C epidemic : a global landscape
The objective of this module is to identify key elements of the global landscape regarding access to hepatitis C prevention, diagnosis and treatment
Presentation 10 : Advocacy to improve access to HCV services in Kenya
The objective of this module is to identify existing gaps for access to HCV services for PWID in Kenya and proposed strategy to address them
